“Today's complacency is tomorrow's captivity,” says Murray Faivalu (left).

The First Foundation Class of 2017 scholarship recipient from Porirua College is wise beyond his years. He knows that, to achieve his dream of pursuing a career in law or politics, he needs to stick with things, even when times are challenging.

Murray is currently in his final year of secondary school. He is looking to attend Victoria University next year using his scholarship, which is sponsored by New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT).

There by his side throughout his tertiary studies will be his First Foundation mentor, legal advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Jonathan Miuliaga (also pictured).

Jonathan says he sees the value in what First Foundation does, providing scholarships to deserving students. "As his mentor, I'll be chipping in however I can to help Murray transition from secondary school to tertiary education, but he's pretty resilient so I think he will be okay."
