Foundation Steps
Two year mentoring programme
The Foundation Steps Mentoring Programme started in 2012 to provide support for students aspiring to study at tertiary level. The purpose of the programme is to identify and provide targeted support for students in making a successful transition from secondary school and into tertiary education.
All participants involved in the 2 year programme are supported in the following ways:
A Personal Mentor
The Mentors role is to assist students through the major transitions from secondary school into university. They will help guide them through their new experiences such as leadership roles in school, self efficacy, exploring study options and the different tertiary institutions and so much more.
Personal and Professional Development workshops
First Foundation facilitate and deliver workshops which include:
- Mentor match
- Induction event
- Pressing the right button (a communication tool)
- UniBound (Preparing for the transition from secondary school to tertiary study)
- Managing University (skills and strategies for starting tertiary study)
- TakingOwnership(reflectingonthefirstsemester of tertiary study)
First Foundation Support
The student success programme consists of the following support services:
- Student and Mentor recruitment
- Student and Mentor matching and support
- Academic monitoring
- Management and review of quarterly progress reports and academic results
- Assistance with scholarships available for tertiary study
