In her Yr 11 Alicia was first in her class academically and was
the recipient of the Carter Observatory Scholarship and an Aurora
Astronomy Scholarship. Amidst an array of other curricular and
extra-curricular involvements, she also displayed a passion for the
Sciences, environmental issues and business-related
endeavours.
Through a First Foundation Scholarship with Telecom Alicia was
given opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the business
sector. Paul Deavoll, from Telecom, said of Alicia "she is clearly
an outstanding student. Her academic achievements to date are
impressive and her referees spoke highly of her reliability,
willingness to be involved and can do attitude." Alicia states "I
have benefited from all aspects of this Scholarship in combination.
You couldn't ask for anything more."
Alicia considered it a goal achieved when she graduated from
Canterbury University with a Bachelor of Science in 2010. Also in
2010 she attended the Conference on Social and Environmental
Accounting Research (CSEAR) in Albury, Australia.
Alicia lost her Uncle in the Christchurch earthquakes and working
through the grief with family has been hugely challenging. In the
face of devastation, Alicia's determination has grown and she is
continuing with plans for more study: a Masters in Environmental
Policy at Lincoln University in 2011. Balancing study and daily
challenges of living in Christchurch and supporting others, Alicia
is also doing some contract work at Telecom.
