Hanna Beshir is an impressive young woman. In October 2007, she
arrived in New Zealand from Ethiopia as a refugee with her widowed
mother and half of her siblings - the others are still in Ethiopia.
The Yr 12 Dean of Onehunga High reflected on Hanna's remarkable
transition to life in New Zealand: 'Hanna's results are incredibly
impressive considering that she knew no English on her arrival in
New Zealand. She is a high achiever who is constantly demonstrating
her drive to succeed and showing initiative.'
In 2008, Hanna obtained nearly all her credits for NCEA Level 1 and
2, including some at Merit and Excellence level for Science and
Accounting. Her talent in Sciences was recognised by her teachers
and in 2009 she participated in the Biology Olympiad and the
Sci-Tech Experience.
"To date, Hanna's record of academic achievement is impressive for
a young migrant student who has only recently started to learn the
English language," said A+ Trust at the time that she was awarded a
First Foundation Scholarship.
Hanna is currently studying for a Certificate in Applied Science at
Unitec.
