Lielt Asfaw

CLASS OF: 2010
SCHOOL: One Tree Hill College
SCHOLARSHIP PARTNER: Auckland DHB Charitable Trust

The Principal of One Tree Hill College is confident that Lielt will make the most of her opportunities through the First Foundation: 'Lielt is a fine young woman and the high level of engagement in her work emphasises her determination and desire to succeed.' Lielt was born in Ethiopia and moved to New Zealand in October of 2007. Regardless of the language barrier she has completed Years 10 and 11 with success. She gained 159 credits at NCEA Level 1, 38 at Merit level.

In addition, Lielt participates in many facets of the school outside the classroom. She is a member of the Interact club, Duke of Edinburgh Gold Program, the Fijian cultural dance group, the Basketball and Touch teams and was second place in the school Cross Country. Lielt is part of the Gateway Program for Science and volunteers at the Refugee and Migrant Services as a translator. In her spare time she works at Pita Bakery House and is a part time actress and model with an agency.

Lielt wishes to become a Pharmacist through study at the University of Auckland or the University of Otago. Lielt believes a career in Pharmacy will satisfy her desire to help others and allow her to work directly in the community to make a difference.

"Lielt has an impressive record of academic achievement for a young refugee student who has only recently started to learn the English language. Lielt is a confident, well spoken student with a demonstrated commitment and strong desire to continue to be of service and care for others." - Mercy Thomas, Nurse Educator(Children's NETP) & Workforce Development Coordinator
