Robert's Careers Advisor at Porirua College believed he was an excellent candidate for a scholarship, at the time saying "Robert is an achiever in everything he does, he is totally motivated and prepared to work hard to achieve his goals. He is multi-talented in both his academic and sporting pursuits."
Robert's recovery from serious illness is an amazing story in itself.
Since completing his First Foundation scholarship, he has moved to Christchurch to play for the Crusaders franchise. Robert's rugby career goes from strength to strength and he was named ITM Cup player of the year at the 2010 NZ Rugby Awards.
