Vaiea is Samoan, born in Canberra and a citizen of NZ. With such an international start to life, it’s no surprise that she is being awarded a scholarship. Her parents have sacrificed a lot for her and, because of this, Vaiea wants to give back.
In her own words: "Growing up, I learned speaking in my culture through my family and joining Samoan classes since Year 9. It has helped me gain knowledge about my culture and vocabulary because it’s who I am. I want to help New-Zealand born Samoans who cannot speak the language. It's who we are as foreigners. It’s important because we all have our individual identity and they should be able to know theirs too."
Vaiea hopes to be a History teacher or anthropologist in Pacific Studies and will be the first person in her family to attend university.
